Description
Kalava, also called mauli, is the red and yellow cotton thread tied around the wrist after a pooja, around the neck of the kalash and on the mango leaves of a toran.
Each roll is about 25 g of soft, strong cotton thread, wound so it pulls off without tangling. One roll is enough for a family pooja with plenty left over; the larger packs are popular with pandits and pooja stores.
Like most dyed cotton, kalava can bleed colour when soaked, so you may want to remove it before swimming.
How to use
- Cut a length that wraps the wrist three to five times.
- Tie with a knot the way your family does, often with a mantra or prayer.
- For the kalash, wrap the thread around its neck before placing the coconut.

Will the colour stain my clothes?
When dry it won't. If it gets soaked, the dye can bleed a little, as with most dyed cotton thread.
